Origin of Sherwanis

Origin of Sherwanis

Do you know the origin of Sherwanis? Well, if you are likely to wear a Sherwani you should know at least some of its history.

Let’s begin! Sherwani was a popular dress among the Persian and Turkish in the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire. By the end of 18th century, it was extremely popular within the men’s community.

Though, sherwani is the national dress in Pakistan, Indian men wear it only on special occasions and not casually. No wonder, with time the designs and styles have upgraded to match the taste and culture of the country. Sherwani is the unique attire of men’s clothing especially wore at weddings and also stated as the symbol of culture. Sherwani comes in silk fabric with hand-made embroidery and to match or contrast the Lehenga of the bride.

Indian Sherwani is precisely worn with matching turban and stoles that add to the beauty of this gorgeous attire.

For the wedding, men also wear the unique combination of formal and ethnic attire. This unique combination is called Jodhpuri suits or the Indo-Western suits. Our Sherwanis for Hire are made in a range of fabric from brocade to terry wool. For the lower garment, sherwani Churidar pyjama, also called the Jodhpurs are used instead of trousers which are used in formal dress. The head gears are even more interesting that gives a splendid look. These are called the safas (turbans) as head gears and Mojaris (juti) as the shoes. The Mojaris are also made with the same fabric from which the sherwani is made along with the similar embroidery. When taken altogether along with sherwani, it becomes the complete wedding dress. A Sherwani looks like a long coat with ban collars which gives an elegant yet cultured look. It is usually buttoned up to the collar with knee length.

This ethnic attire is widely popular in Asian countries but with the vast global reach and trade, this attire is now becoming prominent in countries like UK, USA, Australia and many more.
